Dastan is pleased to announce the opening of Amir Kamand’s solo exhibition titled “Neo-Primitivism” at Dastan’s Basement. The exhibition, which features the artist’s sculptures from the past two years, will be open for public viewing from July 14 through July 21, 2017. This is Amir Kamand’s first solo exhibition. His work has been previously featured in three Annual Outsider Art Exhibitions, including one at V-Gallery (a Dastan:Outside Project), curated by Morteza Zahedi. Amir Kamand (b. 1960, Tehran, Iran) had a career in plastic injection molding, metal machining and lathing. In his early twenties, he established a plastic manufacturing plant, but very soon went to Kish Island to work in the clothing industry. In the early 2000s, he migrated to Tabriz (the largest city in the north west of Iran) and started a vacuuming workshop for PVC sheet production. He was introduced to and fascinated by wax, and started to make wax sculptures, but soon decided that wood was a superior material. After he was diagnosed with diabetes, he went into retirement, making wooden sculptures as a serious hobby. His works were first presented in the Second Annual Outsider Art Exhibition in Laleh Gallery, Tehran.
