AB Gallery is proud to announce the 3rd solo exhibition in Switzerland of Iranian artist Shahriar Ahmadi showcasing his most recent series "Kiss". Ahmadi's work is characterized by an expressive and gestural style, which translates the literary heritage of Iran in an emotional and personal way.
"Kiss" is the continuation of Ahmad's series "Archaic Techniques of Lovemaking" and again deals with the topic of love. As well in this series one can feel the strong attraction between the protagonists painted with spontaneous, eruptive brush strokes. Slowly approaching each other, but never actually kissing, the magic moment "before" is depicted. Although Shahriar Ahmad's works are loaded with strong emotions and passion, their statement cannot only be related to physical love, but they are talking about spiritual love, about Eros, the driving force in striving for truth. In the process of creation the Persian mystical poetry serves as a source of inspiration, in this particular case Hafiz and Sa'di, whose poetry fragments Ahmadi includes in his paintings. Taken out of the context and partly illegibly written he uses the fragments as a visual medium based on the traditional Islamic calligraphy. His figurative depictions in combination with the text excerpts must still not be misunderstood as illustrations, since Ahmadi manages to create an integral whole trough a dynamic, stormy composition out of the scripture and the image, out of the traditional calligraphy and the modern impulsive painting gesture.
