Mohammad Ehsai is a pioneer Iranian artist in calligraphy and in what is now called the art of calligraphic painting who, along with several other artists active in this field, was able to present calligraphic painting not only well inside the country, but also abroad.
Ehsai studied art at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tehran University, and years later taught calligraphic painting there. His activities in the art world include holding numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, winning international awards, teaching at art universities, being a member of the board of trustees of Iranian calligraphers and graphic designers associations, and judging various art biennials. Ehsai’s first presence in the auctions dates back to May 2006 at the Christie's Auction House.
With the help of his knowledge of Iranian calligraphy Ehsai reached a modern expression in his calligraphic works. The letters and the entanglement of the words play the main role in his Art works. Rather than focusing on the letters in his work, he has used twisting forms on the canvas. In fact, it can be said that Ehsai’s works are a graphical combination of words and letters that have intertwined and created a texture of countless knots.
Certainly, the most important achievement of Ehsai in calligraphic painting practice is revelation in persian letters which led to renovation of words. He beautifully breaks the structure of the word and frees its letters in order to link the Persian script to the principles of modernist painting in this aesthetic way.
“Certainly, the most important achievement of Ehsai in calligraphic painting practice is a revelation in Persian letters which led to the renovation of words,” Alireza Sami Azar in his book (The Birth of Iranian Modernism) writes about Ehsai. “He beautifully breaks the structure of the word and frees its letters in to link the Persian script to the principles of modernist painting in this aesthetic way.”
