About Dia Azzawi
Dia Al-Azzawi is one of the leading contemporary artists of Iraq and the Arab world, whose work is distinguished by its synthesis of modernism and Iraq's rich cultural heritage.
He studied archaeology at the University of Baghdad before continuing his artistic training at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad. During his student years, Al-Azzawi joined Al-Marsam Al-Hurr (The Free Studio), one of the key circles in the emergence of modern Iraqi art. In 1969, he co-founded the New Vision Group, which played a significant role in the development of contemporary Iraqi painting.
During this period, literature and poetry became central to his artistic practice, leading to the creation of series such as Dafatir (Notebooks) and Illustrated Poems, in which text, Arabic calligraphy, and image are intricately interwoven.
Mythology, the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia, folklore, literature, and Arabic calligraphy are among the defining elements of Al-Azzawi's visual language. He has lived and worked in London since 1976.
