“Majaz, which means both figurative and unreal in Persian, refers to an inexplicable experience. Such an experience is also felt when entering Büyük Valide Han. This is the experience of an invisible phenomenon. When I first stepped into this place, the light entering through the windows impressed me; the light created a fascinating dynamic effect in the space. Expertly applied light enriches the spatial quality beyond illuminating the interior. This versatility has been an important element of Islamic architecture throughout history.
In Islamic architecture, light is part of the ornament. With the use of architectural factors, the light that is invisible on the outside changes inside and turns into a fascinating, lively and tangible experience. I use light in an architectural sense and improve the quality of the space. The sculpture, which gives its name to the exhibition, plays with the glow using traditional forms of muqarnas (architectural ornament in the form of a honeycomb). Avoiding to cover the whole area with large-scale structural efforts, Majaz creates a new culmination in the space. Majaz represents a superior and complete world, a utopia.”
In the exhibition MAJAZ, Hesamiyan collaborated with artist Buşra Tunç to create a site-specific installation for BLOK art space 's project area 53 in Büyük Valide Han .
The other works of the artist, inspired by the formation process, details and plans of this settlement, which forms one leg of the Majaz exhibition, will be exhibited simultaneously in the Çukurcuma space of BLOK art space.
