"I began photography by recording what surrounded me, now I take what is around me into the studio and make it into what I see through the prism of my life and culture." Sadegh Tirafkan
One of the pioneers of Iranian contemporary photography, Tirafkan uses his knowledge of culture to explore his Persian identity. His strong attachment to his Persian roots clearly shows in his artwork, which employs different media: photography, video, installation and collage.
Tirafkan was born in Iraq in 1965 to Iranian parents. He fled Iraq with his family when he was six years old before the Islamic revolution took place. With a degree in photography from Tehran University, Tirafkan has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide since 1990.
Concerned with the influence of media and 'destructive cultures' on youth, Tirafkan questions the future of their true culture and identity in this series.
