Nariman Farrokhi was born in Tehran in 1985. Farrokhi is a self-taught artist and is considered a naive artist. Farrokhi's first solo exhibition was held in 2011 at Maryam Fasihi Harandi Gallery in Tehran. Then he collaborated with Destan Gallery in several group exhibitions. His first international appearance was in 2016 at Dubai Artfair by Dastan Gallery. The same year, Dastan Gallery also presented his artworks at the Sydney Contemporary Artfair. In 2017, Farrokhi also participated in the Artissima Artfair.
Farrokhi's paintings have a primitive and mythological character. This primitive trait is visible in his simple, raw, and rough representations. He directly visualizes his observations using simple materials and techniques. Nariman Farrokhi has used authentic and specific texts many times in his artworks, looking for a way to dialog using written language. This approach has gradually led to the development of a unique visual alphabet, a writing system similar to hieroglyphs, which accentuates the primitive effects of his works. Nariman Farrokhi's works are somewhere between abstraction and symbolism. His works can be placed along with other naive and self-taught painters of the 20th century, such as Basquiat and Tapis, A way of painting that turns its back on academic art skills and builds its visual world on the artist's pure and childlike instinct. It seems that Farrokhi, in addition to these, had a partial view of the illustration's tradition in comic strip works.
For this reason, some of his works are reminiscent of Keith Haring's paintings dealing with human figures and other elements. At the same time, sometimes, spontaneity can be seen in Farrokhi's artworks. However, his use of colors is controlled and proportionate. Although in the way he rubs these colors on the canvas, he has a crude behavior that is compatible with his works' primitive spirit. In some of his paintings, we see elements similar to totems. Animals such as cows and dogs, which have a mythological meaning, are also among this painter's favorite motifs. Some of his artworks are also created in more informal formats. For example, we can refer to a series of his works, which are drawn on the pages of notebooks with lines, using colored pencils and pens.
