Mohammad Hassan Afshar Oroumi, a prominent painter and qalamdan (pen box) artist of the Qajar period, was one of the court artists and a representative of the courtly figurative painting style. He gained access to the court of Fath Ali Shah and continued his work during the reigns of Mohammad Shah and Nasser al-Din Shah.
Afshar Oroumi was active from 1819 to 1862. During these years, his artistic style evolved from the conventional painting of the Fath Ali Shah era, incorporating principles of perspective, highlighting, and volumetric rendering to adopt a more creative approach.
Due to his presence at court, he depicted numerous portraits of kings and courtiers. Notable works include the portrait of Mohammad Shah in 1837, currently housed in the Louvre Museum, and the portrait of Nasser al-Din Shah in 1855. His attention to facial expressions and the meticulous portrayal of facial features are distinguishing characteristics of his works.
