Habibollah Ayatollahi obtained his bachelor's degree in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Tehran (1955-1959). He furthered his education by completing post-graduate courses in aesthetics and earning a doctorate in visual arts at Sorbonne University in Paris (1963-1968). Beginning in 1970, he embarked on a career in teaching at universities. Ayatollahi inaugurated his solo exhibition at Seyhoun Gallery in 1970, marking the beginning of a series of displays of his works in solo and group exhibitions both in Iran and internationally. Among his literary contributions, Ayatollahi has authored several books, including "Translations of Clergy in Art" (1970) and "Dot, Line, Volume" (1973).
