Ali Rahimi was born in 1995 in Daikundi, Afghanistan. He migrated to Iran and held his first solo exhibition at the age of 22 at the Sayeh Gallery in Tehran (2017). Since then, he has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in cities such as Tehran, Australia, and Bergen.
Ali Rahimi draws inspiration for his paintings from the lives of migrants. His art narrates the stories of war, migration, protest, and resistance. His early paintings featured faces with eyes staring intensely at the viewer, faces that, according to Rahimi, no longer submit to tyranny.
In his recent collection, Rahimi’s work has taken on a more abstract quality, reminiscent of Rothko’s color fields. Previously, his close-up depictions of distressed faces have now evolved to portray the broader landscape of solitary individuals and marginalized groups.
In 2023, this Afghan artist was awarded the Culture of Resistance prize.
