I began painting flowers when, amidst my figurative and still life works, I started to experiment more with “seeing.” Gradually, it became a significant part of my daily process until today, where I paint flowers more than ever, alongside my other paintings.
At first glance, this shift in focus and attention to flowers was a change for myself and my worldview, as well as a further opening of the language of painting. Today, I feel that my painting flows more joyfully and with a positive atmosphere.
This is something that, when revisiting painters like Van Gogh, Matisse, and Hockney, captivated me. For them, painting flowers was a way of acknowledging the transience of life and beauty.
Hockney once said about Van Gogh’s sunflowers: “You’ll notice that they don’t last long… You have to paint them. Quickly. If you want them to seem like life is in them.”
